Protect Ocean Wildlife from Cooling Water Intakes California’s coastal and bay-side power plants use an outdated cooling technology known as “once-through cooling” that needlessly kills billions marine species each year including fish, larvae, plankton, sea lions and turtles. Once-through cooled power plants dramatically impact the health of our ocean, the viability of coastal economies, and the natural heritage we will leave for future generations.
Tired of Dirty Water?
The EPA has estimated a $500 billion shortfall over the next two decades to repair our nation’s aging water infrastructure. This bill seeks to establish a dedicated trust fund for clean water infrastructure. The Water Protection and Reinvestment Trust Fund would provide billions of dollars per year to states to repair, maintain or upgrade their existing water infrastructure needs, correct combined sewer overflows (CSOs), address non-point source runoff issues, and fund a pharmaceuticals take back program

Surfrider Beach is legendary and iconic. It is the image of classic California beach culture. Surfing myths and legends have been borne out of First Point – Dora, Gidget, Tubesteak. Millions of visitors flock annually to this picturesque point. Yet, Surfrider is one of the dirtiest beaches in California, consistently earning F water quality grades and failing to meet TMDL limits to bacteria and nutrient loads in the water. This poses serious health risks to surfers and bathers at Surfrider Beach.
Ban the Bag
Single-use plastic bags represent one of the greatest environmental catastrophes of our generation. It is estimated that 60-80% of all debris in the ocean is plastic. Plastics take hundreds of years to break down at sea and most types never truly biodegrade. As a result, marine animals often get entangled in the debris or mistake it for food. Support the Portland Chapter reduce the use of these damaging bags.
Pass the Beach Bill
Urge your Senators to show their support for healthy beaches and robust coastal economies by cosponsoring the Clean Coastal Environment & Public Health Act of 2009. Don’t let them put this off for yet another year!
Marine Life Protection Act
We all know our ocean is not in the shape it used to be. Whether it is pollution, climate change, or mismanagement of resources–humans have taken a toll on the ocean. To help improve our ocean’s health, the State is setting aside ‘protected areas’ so that marine life can thrive.
